Subject: LL-L: Ulster-Scots

An opinion piece in today's _Irish Times_ on the campaign to have
Ulster-Scots officially recognised as a minority language:

All,

The Official Ulster-Scots Mailing List has also moved (great minds
obviously think alike), and is now fully automated on "rootsweb.com".

The list attracts members from all over the Germanic-speaking world,
and is a useful resource not only for those with an interest in the
Scots language in Ireland, but also to those simply interested in
development of minority languages. We would be particularly
interested at the minute in any Frisian-speakers who may be able to
give us tips on such language revival given the success of their own.

To subscribe send a mail to ULLANS-L-request at rootsweb.com (or, for
digest mode, ULLANS-D-request at rootsweb.com), with the command
"subscribe" in the main body of the mail. There is no need for a
subject header, but if your software requires one, just put
"subscribe" here too.

There remains doubt over exactly what is about to happen with the
Ulster-Scots language and possible UK Government funding.
Ulster-Scots has been recognised as a "Grade 2" minority language in
its own right by the UK Government and EBLUL (European Bureau for
Lesser-used Languages), i.e. the same status as Scots in Scotland and
Gaelic in Northern Ireland, and one below Welsh. This should mean a
grant of at least one million pounds (c. 1.6 - 1.7 million US
dollars) per annum from the UK Government - as yet however the USHC
(Ulster-Scots Heritage Council) hasn't seen a penny of it.

Also note the website,
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Rhodes/1677/ullans.html
to which has recently been added an essay comparing some of the
lexical and grammatical structures of Ulster-Scots and German. If any
list members notice similar structures involving Lowlands languages,
I would be glad to be made aware of them.

Kind regards,
--------
Ian.
