Subject: "Place names"

We were asked about the etymology of  "es" in Drenthe.

J de Vries, "Etymologisch Woordenboek" has "markgrond, vooral in oostelijke
dialecten, vgl. mnl "esc", ohd "ezzisc",
os. "-esschon", got. "atisk" = "zaadveld". Misschien is te vergelijken lat.
"ador" = `spelt'.
(Spelt is a kind of wheat.)

In MHG it is "ezzesch".
