Subject: Help for Joao (was "introduction")

Dear Joao,

I have only just read your email, as I have been away, hence my late reply.
As a matter of fact we are practically neighbours: I live in Valladolid, a
mere 300 kilometres from you!

Whatever course you decide to follow it must be a tape course, and you will
need to give a lot more attention to pronunciation than with most languages.
The reason for this is that Dutch people are unused to hearing foreigners
speaking their language and will not understand you unless your
pronunciation is very accurate.

I suggest the following course: Levend Nederlands (no author), published by
Cambridge University Press. ISBN 0 521 275768.

Other members of the list may well know it. It's an old-fashioned book in
many ways (very behaviourist-influenced, lots of drills etc). In short, the
kind of book that would make many people throw up their hands in horror, but
I found it useful myself when I started.

I hope this is of some use,

Richard Turner
