Subject: LL-L: "Humor" [A/E]

Haai, julle!

Ek wil julle graag gou 'n storie rondom die eufemistiese gebruik van die
Amerikaanse _ass_ vertel en die moontlike verwarring wat dit kan
meebring:

Onlangs vra iemand my hoe mens "Yours forever" in Afrikaans vertaal want
'n "chat" vriendin in die VSA het 'n warme liedesverhouding met 'n
Afrikaanse man en sy wil tog so graag vir hom af en toe ietsie in
Afrikaans sê.

Ek stel toe Travlang se _Online Dictionaries_ voor om die plaekouse van
my nek af te kry.
Die dame in die VSA vererg haar toe effens, maar 'surf' toe nietemin die
English/Afrikaans en stuur haar toe die boodskap: "Soen my esel".

Groete!

Elsie Zinsser

Subject: 'Nomenclature' (was 'Names')

Lowlanders,
Greetings, all. Though I'll be on hiatus for awhile, it occurs
to me that we
could follow the lead taken by Walter Bruce Willis (his real name) for calling
Our
Founder, Ron/Reinhard Hahn something more indicative of his "auctoritas" than
the pointlessly "primus inter pares" status implied by his "List Owner"
appellation.
To wit, instead of "Die Hard," we'll say "Die (oder 'Der?') Reinhard;" rather
than
"Die Harder," we'll say " Die Reinharder;" and finally, in contradistinction
to "Die
Hard With A Vengeance," we'll say "Die Reinhard Mit Een Ingvaeonigeance." -
Say
what? - Hey, wait, come back; you haven't heard my Mozarabic stuff yet! ... So
it's
not the valedictory I'd been hoping for, either; but it was all I could come
up with
on short notice. It's very gratifying to hear that the List is attracting so
many new
members now, because one of its most appealing features is this List's
reassuring
cadre of "LL-Lifers" providing consistently rigorous yet readable commentary
on
Lowlands languages in counterpoint to contributions by newcomers and nomads
who offer perspectives not ordinarily considered by LL-L's hardcore
constituents,
which becomes interwoven into a beautiful if sometimes baroque bibliographical

bouclé* which is always a pleasure to behold. It is also outstanding among
e-mail
communities for its high standard of basic literacy, where such considerations
as
accuracy in spelling, punctuation and syntax are matters for general concern;
and
in my view this is an extraordinary thing, which I am grateful as "all get
out" for, if
you'll allow me to flaunt the rules I'm advocating so vehemently here. It's
part of
the List's charm that it can be as entertaining as it is erudite, and I'm glad
to have
been threading along with you all during these last seven months. I hope to
come
back again someday, like "Die Reinhard" has, but until then... Groeten, Joe
Carson

* Note: Why does anybody learn, much less remember, such a word? "Bouclé" is
a French style of weaving fabric with numerous tightly curled loops on its
surface
that create a pattern, or inscription, or image, such as is used in tapestries
or rugs.
