* NEW B.A. IN LOW SAXON (LOW GERMAN)

Beginning this coming winter semester, Ernst Moritz Arndt University in
Griepswohld/Greifswald, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is offering a
bachelor's degree program in Low Saxon (Low German). Students will acquire
knowledge of regional culture and also basic language proficiency within only
six semesters. The program is structurally innovative in that it is more
strongly career-oriented and provides basic knowledge without specialization.
Its general studies component includes German and English language studies as
well as electives in economics, law, culture and education. General and major
components are organized in the form of modules that consist of thematically
linked educational events. There is also an internship component.

At the same time, the university will continue to offer Low Saxon as a minor
studies program to master's degree students and to students of education.

* LOW SAXON IN KINDERGARTENS

Responding to a trend toward Low Saxon (Low German) regaining its status as a
popular language, the Task Force German Sleswig/Schleswig has instituted
German-Low Saxon bilingualism in eight of its 27 kindergartens.

German, Low Saxon, Frisian and Danish are being used in Sleswig/Schleswig, the
northern part of Germany's northernmost state of
Sleswig-Holsteen/Schleswig-Holstein. The coexistence of these languages is
seen as one of the model cases for a uniting Europe. The Task Force seeks to
expose the state's children to this linguistic and cultural diversity
beginning with the kindergarten level, and similar bilingual projects involve
Danish and Frisian. They do not include formal language studies but provide
contextual language exposure and proficiency through the use of both languages
in various activities. At least one of the teachers in each kindergarten is a
native Low Saxon speaker.

The project has met with positive responses ranging from approval to
enthusiasm. It has led to contacts and collaboration with numerous individuals
and organizations that use and/or promote the Low Saxon language. Especially
profitable have been contacts between the children and senior citizens.

* NEW LANGUAGE PRIMER

The Schriever- un Mesterkring (Circle of Writers and Masters) of
Ollenborg/Oldenburg's Association "Spieker" have published a new Low Saxon
(Low German) primer, _Leesbook för Scholen_ (Reader for Schools). A supplement
to the previously published materials for the Low Saxon Reading Competition,
it will be distributed to 360 lower-level schools in the area. The book may
also be used by anyone else who wishes to study the language.

* LOW SAXON CONFERENCE

A state-wide Low Saxon (Low German) Conference is being organized in
Sleswig-Holsteen/Schleswig-Holstein. It will be held on Saturday, September
12, in Eckernföör/Eckernförde. Among the speakers will be State President
Heinz Werner Arens, addressing the issue of "Tweedusend un Plattdüütsch" (Low
Saxon and the Year 2000).

* EUROPEAN LANGUAGE CHARTER

The European Language Charter will be the focus of a conference in Bevensen,
Lower Saxony, between September 17 and September 19, 1999. The topic is "De
Charta ... Man Doon is'n Ding".(The Charter: Putting it into practice is the
problem). Politicians and civil servants will inform and be informed.  This
includes real-life examples of using Low Saxon with youngsters.

* HANS HENNING HOLM AWARD

The Hans Henning Holm Award will be officially presented at the Bevensen
Conference (see above). This year's recipient is Wolfgang Sieg who will be
recognized for his achievements as a Low Saxon (Low German) radio playwright.

* FREUDENTHAL AWARD

The Freudenthal Award for Low Saxon (Low German) literature will be taken
abroad for the first time this year. The two winners will be Helmer Stumberg
of Schortens, Lower Saxony, who submitted a collection of short stories, and
Franz Brookmann (penname for Reinhard F. Hahn) of Seattle in the US State of
Washington, who submitted a group of poems under the collective title
,,elektroonsche elegien - lyrik för de jaardusendwenn'' (electronic elegies:
poems for the turn of the millenium). The award ceremony will be held on
Saturday, September 25, in Salta/Soltau, Lower Saxony.

* INCREASED MEDIA ATTENTION

A symposium at the University of Ollenborg/Oldenburg will focus on the
treatment of Low Saxon (Low German) in the media in the light of the European
Language Charter.

* LOW SAXON (LOW GERMAN) IN BRANNENBORG/BRANDENBURG

Preservation of Low Saxon (Low German) in the state of Brannenborg/Brandenburg
is the general topic of a discussion meeting in Prenzlau on October 9.
