Roger asked about the Etruscan alphabet. According to the Cambridge
Encyclopaedia of Language it was derived from the Greek alphabet about 800
BCE and runes were developed about 300 CE, by which time I think Etruscan
was thoroughly extinct. Nordic runes could be written either L>R or R>L.
Etruscan was apparently sometimes written in boustrophedon, ie with
alternate lines running R>L and L>R, though this was fairly common n the
Mediterranean area.

What progress has been made in translating Etruscan? I once read a book
which said it was closely related to Albanian but the author simply ignored
the vowels and claimed that words were equivalent if the consonants matched.
Since most Etruscan texts are, I think, funerary inscriptions there is not
much for the would-be translator to get his/her teeth into.
