Ian,
You're of course right about Catala' being more closely-related to Valencian
than to Castellano (even more, if I'm not mistaken, to Provenc,al). I do
seem to recall, however, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, that
Franco used to refer to Catalunyan as a corruption of "good" Spanish - that
is, Castilian - and used it as a pretext for banning it (of course the real
reason was a political one).
As for Serbian and Croatian, aren't they actually one language (nowadays
often called Serbian-Croatian, as opposed to Serbo-Croatian), with only
minor differences - the most important one being the alphabet?
