Aviad,

Ah yes, you're quite right that Franco's regime used
to describe Catalan as 'corrupt', but ultimately it
was still recognized as a language (albeit an
'inferior one'). I think all I was saying was that
actually the Catalan/Castilian debate is not always
the clearest cut.

Linguists would, of course, regard Serbo-Croat as one
tongue, but these days for political reasons Serbians
and Croats do not. For example, UN peace missions ran
into difficulties when using 'Serbo-Croat'
interpreters - both sides refused to recognize them
and there are records of attempts at carrying out
deals in English alone to avoid having to use them.

All very sad, and all part of the reason for it being
essential, as Ron says, to point out that there is not
always one language to one nation or one nation to one
language.
