        Hi Sandy, hi all,

The name Pine Pienaar in Afrikaans is also one of those that you
refer to, i.e. that there is
no obvious explanation for the nickname.

I suspect the original Nobby, Sticky, Tug and Pine were colorful
characters and people, being creatures of habit, called all others with
that surname by that specific nickname.
(I think the original Pine Pienaar was a popular WW II pilot.)

It would not surprise me if this phenomenon, of calling all
others by the same nickname, is not typical within socially
depersonalized institutions, like the armed forces/jails/orphanages/poor
houses/hostels, where the need for the familiar is that more acute.

How come William became "Bill", Robert "Bob" and Richard "Dick"?

        Regards
        Elsie Zinsser
