Subject: My lastname

Hallo Lowlanders,

This is my first time posting, and, like other first-timers, I am not sure
whether this posting is relevant to the list.

In any case I am curious if anyone can tell me more about my lastname,
Elzinga.

I know the name is Frisian and that there are many Frisian lastnames that
end in -inga and these are part of an even larger class of lastnames ending
in -a (-sma, -stra, -ma, etc.).  If the origins of the name itself are not
known, I would appreciate any information on the significance of -inga
ending or the -a ending.

I have wondered about the meaning of my last name ever since I realized that
most of the last names of my Dutch acquaintances (and there were many in
Canada) could be translated into English from Dutch.  My mother, who was
born in Friesland and lived there till she was nine, does not know the
meaning of the name.  Any information would be appreciated.
