As I was reading Ian's intriguing explication of the manner in which
plural vs singular usages apply to collective nouns in the UK, he caused
me to be reminded, toward the end of his note, a matter that I wonder
about amongst the speakers of English across the world -- when to use
"which" or "that" or "who(m)". There is good deal of controversy about
such usages in the US, and several "grammarians" have made comments
(particularly with regard to "whom" -- many wish it to be eliminated
even its traditional case usage).
