It's true that the Scots from Ireland
were the original Gaelic speaking
people.
But after the formation of the kingdom
of Alba (Scots + Picts + Britons, all
three were celtic peoples) the Pictish
culture mostly disappeared and was
replaced by Gaelic.
Gaelic was up to the 12th century the
(predominant) language of the whole
Scottish Kingdom.
Even in Dumfries and Fife it survived
till the late 17th, early 18th century.
The last Gaelic speaking king was James
IV (1488-1513).
