Dear Lowlanders,
Sometime late today my time (North American Pacific Standard Time) I
will hand the LL-L steering wheel over to our trusted deputy Sandy
Fleming, with Mathieu van Woerkom standing by to assist him, while I
undergo surgery tomorrow and convalesce for a few days after that.
Usually LL-L membership numbers decline during the Northern Hemisphere
summer and then goes up again in September and October. Curiously, this
NH summer the number of subscriptions has increased sharply. Some
people have unsubscribed themselves (or asked me to do so because they
were unwilling to follow instructions), typically a day or two after
subscribing. However, their number has been consistently smaller than
that of new and lasting subscriptions. Just two or three weeks ago the
subscriber number stood at around 300. Just now, after I unsubscribed
several "dead" addresses, we have 377 subscribers. Perhaps it is due to
the new website (http://www.lowlands-l.net/) and the facilitated
subscription method.
Since I last reported on subscriptions last Sunday (August 4) we have

Here are a few things for everyone to note:
(1) Vacation:
(a) Some people go on vacation and allow their mailboxes to become
filled to capacity ("over quota"). This results in mail bouncing back
and error messages flooding in after each Lowlands-L issue goes out. I
let that go on for a few days and after that unsubscribe the person, if
the server program does not already do so automatically. If you suspect
this may happen to your account during your absence, please unsubscribe
for the duration of your absence, and then resubscribe after your
return. You can go to the archive
(http://listserv.linguistlist.org/archives/lowlands-l.html) to read what
you missed.
(b) Some people turn on their vacation notices. Some automated
vacation notices register each recipient and will not send further
notices to them. Unfortunately, most people do not have that kind. In
such cases I get a vacation notice message from each of these persons'
accounts for each LL-L issue I send out. This is very annoying! Unless
you have a one-time-only vacation notice function, please unsubscribe
and then resubscribe after your return. You can go to the archive
(http://listserv.linguistlist.org/archives/lowlands-l.html) to read what
you missed.

(4) "Lowlands Talk":
We still welcome volunteer writers and translators for the online
language introduction ("blurb") series we are currently creating. Most
urgently, we could use some help translating the blurbs into French,
Spanish and Portuguese. If anyone wishes to translate the blurbs into
Chinese, Japanese or Arabic (or any other language) and can commit
themselves to following through, we would welcome that very much. If
you need more information, please write to me (admin at lowlands-l.net)
with a copy to Mathieu van Woerkom (Mathieu.vanWoerkom at student.kun.nl).

(5) History:
One of our new subscribers, and a few others in the past, have asked me
about the history of Lowlands-L. In a nutshell, Lowlands-L evolved out
of a lengthy email discussion Henk Wolf (Netherlands) and I began at the
end of 1994. Henk brought with him strong knowledge of and about
Frisian, besides Dutch and other language varieties of the Low
Countries, and I brought into the mix knowledge and interest regarding
Lowlands Saxon (Low German) and a number of other related and unrelated
languages, and both of us had backgrounds in various fields of
linguistics. We found that we could communicate quite well each in his
language. Email discussion lists had begun to become all the rage at
the time, so we decided to create our own in May 1995: Lowlands-L. We
were blown away by the response: about two weeks after announcing the
List we had well over 200 subscribers. Amazingly, a few of those early
subscribers are still with us, and others who joined in the early years
are still loyal to us too. A while ago, Henk went on to different and
hopefully better things, and I continued with the List. However, I have
not been doing so single-handedly. For one thing, Ted Harding, Ian
Parsley, Sandy Fleming and Mathieu van Woerkom have been standing by as
deputies and advisors, and Sandy has taken the steering wheel several
times during my absence. Many "Lowlanders" have taken active parts, not
only in discussions but also in various projects gathering and
displaying the online information you can find at our website. Our
current project is "Lowlands Talk" (see 4 above). I hope we can later
make available online some sound files, either as a part of "Lowlands
Talk" or as a different project. I need to add that Lowlands-L has been
mentioned not only in numerous web presentations but occasionally also
in the printed media and in radio programs (e.g., in a Frisian interview
with Henk on Omrop Fryslân and in a telephone interview with me in
Lowlands Saxon on NDR, North German Broadcasting). Furthermore, our own
Colin Wilson was featured in our own Ole Stig Andersen's program about
Gaelic and Scots in Scotland on Danmarks Radio
(http://www.olestig.dk/scotland/). Finally, members of Lowlands-L have
done their parts in attempts, some of them successful, to influence
institutions and administrations regarding Lowlands and minority
language matters. What about the future? Well, go on in like manner
for one thing, possibly registration as a non-profit organization.
Suggestions, assistance and advocacy are always welcome. - One
subscriber has suggested that we put a brief history of Lowlands-L on
the web. Might this be an idea other subscribers support? Also, I
would like to know how everyone feels about an online sub-series in
which (some) Lowlands-L members introduce themselves. Of course, the
latter would be on an entirely voluntary basis.
Dear Lowlanders, hopefully I will "see" you again soon, probably
sometime next week, depending how I feel at the time. I know that you
will be in very competent hands while Sandy and Mathieu keep HMS
Lowlands on course.
