Manufacturers in the United States had a great deal to do with bringing
in the word "radio". Wireless conjured up crystal sets and earphones.
Sarnoff's RADIO Corp of America, for example, helped mightily to install
the word "radio" in everyone's mind. By 1928, not only had the word
"radio" become very much established in the USA, but it even became
something of a minor campaign issue in the 1928 presidentail election --
many rural Americans were annoyed at Al Smith's [the Democrat candidate]
pronunciation of "radio" as "rAH-dee-oh". In other words, not only was
the word established, it even had a dialectical variation!
