Dear Lowlanders,

Let's give a cordial welcome to those who have joined us recently!
Kudos to those among them who right away got their feet wet by posting,
especially Ansgar Fehnker who did so perfectly at first strike.

Please do not feel intimidated to submit postings to LL-L. Send them to
this address: lowlands-l at listserv.linguistlist.org

Before you do, please read or review the rules:
http://www.geocities.com/sassisch/rhahn/lowlands/rules.html
It is also a good idea to watch how more experienced subscribers write
their postings before you send in your own submissions.

If you are a novice, it is also a good idea to search the archive
(http://listserv.linguistlist.org/archives/lowlands-l.html) before you
write, to see if what you wish to ask or discuss has already been delt
with and answered before you joined us. You need to check (click on)
"Substring" if do a search by entering search/key words, for otherwise
only the headings are searched, rather than the bodies of postings.

A few new subscribers have asked me privately about the language
varieties used in some of the postings, especially the one I tend to use
besides English. Mine is Low Saxon ("Low German") of Northern Germany,
now officially recognized in Germany and the Netherlands. If you are
puzzled by choices of language, please check the heading of the issue.
In square brackets you will find language flags. For example, [D/E/L/S]
means that this issue contains postings in Dutch, English, Limburgish
and Scots. You find the key in the masthead of each issue:

=======================================================================
 A=Afrikaans Ap=Appalachian D=Dutch E=English F=Frisian L=Limburgish
 LS=Low Saxon (Low German) S=Scots Sh=Shetlandic Z=Zeelandic (Zeeuws)
=======================================================================

However, if you are still puzzled, please do not hesitate to ask. This
list is all about getting people together for learning from and about
each other's languages and cultures. Asking and sharing are therefore
strongly encouraged.

Also, if you wish to find out more about these languages, please visit
our various online guides:
http://www.geocities.com/sassisch/rhahn/lowlands/lowlands-links.htm
There you will find lists of links to useful sites that will help you to
learn more.

We also have guides to offline material, which are basic bibliographies:
http://www.geocities.com/sassisch/rhahn/lowlands/guides_offline.htm

Welcome, and best wishes,
Reinhard "Ron" Hahn
Founder and Administrator, Lowlands-L
