Yes, that was my first posting - I'm enjoying reading the postings although
I'm not familiar with a lot of the technicalities of the languages.
I do speak Platt fluently and enjoyed speaking it when I visited
Ostfriesland 3 years ago.

Lowlands-L.  In any case, I'd like to welcome you and thank you for being

Folks, here are a few cuckoo references found in the _Hadeler
Handwörterbuch_ (Heinrich Teut, Neumünster: Wachholtz, 1960)*:

Ans de Kukuuk in’t Holt röppt, so röppt he d’r weller rut.
["When the cuckoo calls into the woods it calls out of it again."]
(You reap what you sow? What goes around comes around?)

De kriggt den Kukuuk nich weller to hören.
["He/She won't get to hear the cuckoo again."]
"He/She won't live to see another summer."

Wenn de Kukuuk schree’t, dat kœnt de Hamerstäl nich af, denn dröögt se in.
["When the cuckoo calls, hammer shafts can't withstand it; that's when they
dry up."]
(Wood shrinks in the heat of summer.)

Röppt de Kukuuk väl, giff't Rägen.
["It's going to rain if the cuckoo calls a lot."]

There is a lot more, including lots of compounds.  I might share these
later.

Also, _Kukuuk_ is one of the taboo replacements for _Düvel_ ~ _Dübel_
'devil'; e.g.

Di schall de Kukuuk halen!
["May the cuckoo get you!"]
"Go to hell!"
