Als je met _appelkoos_ de vrucht bedoelt die in het Nederlands 'abrikoos'
genoemd wordt (E _apricot_), dan durf ik te betwijfelen of dat woord van
Portugese oorsprong is. In het Zeeuws, dat samen met andere
zuidwest-Nederlandse streektalen nogal wat aan het Afrikaans heeft
bijgedragen, bestaat het woord namelijk ook in exact dezelfde vorm:
_appelkoos_ of _appelekoze_ (NL 'abrikoos', E _apricot_). En ik kan me niet
voorstellen dat er hier in Zeeland enige Portugese invloed op de taal is
geweest...

Subject: Etymology

Apparently, "apricot" is one of those words that has several stamps in its
passport.

Yes, in the Germanic languages it seems to have arrived from Portuguese
(though some say it came from Spanish), the Portuguese word being
_albricoque_ (cf., Spanish _albaricoque_, _albérchigo_, Catalan _albercoc_,
French _abricot_; Port. & Span. also _damasco_ < Damascus) . Like so many
words that start with _al..._ in the languages of the Iberian Peninsula,
this is an Arabic loan: البرفوف _albirqûq_ ~ _alburqûq_ (where _al-_ denotes
the definite article; Mod. Arab. مشمش _mishmish_ 'apricot').

However, Arabic received the word from Greek or Latin: Greek _praikókion_
> _prekókia_ > _berikókkia_ > Modern βερύκκοκο _beríkokko_, and Greek
got it from Latin _praecoqquus_ "the early ripening one".

Reinhard/Ron
