I don't think so. This is the same careless mistake that
people keep making with Appalachian - an actual comparison
would reveal that these are closely related to the dialects
of the South West of England. Doesn't Newfie involve a lot of
gender nouns, whereas in Scots gender is normally restricted
to indicating sex? This is a feature of English west country
dialects as spoken in Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire &c.
