Ik denk dat het woord _optof_ dat Elsie noemt eerder van het Nederlandse
_opdoffen_ komt (zelfde betekenis). _Opdoffen_ heeft in elk geval niets met
_tof_ te maken, maar alles met _dof_ (grauw).

"(Zich) opdoffen" in het Nederlands. De t in het Afrikaans ontstaat
waarschijnlijk door assimilatie, en dan is verband met "tov"
onwaarschijnlijk.

Het WNT vermeldt vreemd genoeg niet precies deze betekenis van
"opdoffen".
