Elsie,
Dat is aardig. Ik lees nu ineens een woord dat ik
allemachtig lang niet meer gehoord heb.
Ik ben opgegroeid in Amsterdam [in de Pijp], en
toendertijd kon je daar het woord 'optoffen' in deze
zelfde betekenis horen.

Ek verskil met jou hier. Opdoffen het 'n negatiewe konnotasie, m.a.w.
'verdof' 'verdonker'
terwyl 'optof' in Afrikaans 'n positiewe konnotasie het. Die Afrikaanse
Etimologiese
Woordeboek beskryf die woord as komende uit Oxford universiteit
studentetaal. 'tuft'
-simboliese klossie op pet om adelstand aan te dui - wat in 'toff' en toe in
Afrikaans
'tof' verander het.
