From: James Wren
Subject: Language Varieties

To this discussion, let me add the following:

In the Delta region, as far north as Western Kentucky, I have noticed the
following pronunciations:

I. perfek < perfect
exack < exact
respek < respect
objek < object
disinfeck < disinfect

In each of these, whenever c and t come together, they become k.

II. chaRAKter (accent on penultimate syllable) < character

My source for both of these is a 63-year old native-speaking female, born
and educated in mid-Tennessee, later transplanted to the area around
Birmingham, Alabama. In her own opinion, these are "illiteracies" that she
uses daily; she does make a conscious effort not to use them among
strangers, outsiders, etc. And she does correct her own family members who
might use them.

Interesting.

Jim Wren
