Thanks for that -I have an Iranian friend who is many miles from home -so
was able to send her New year greetings in Persian because of your message
:-)

Sorry, Chris. My Mail program butchered the Farsi version in Arabic script
due to left-to-right versus right-to-left switch problems. I hope it will
come out all right this time:

  ﻧﻮ ﺭﻭﺯ ﻣﺒﺎرك
 Naw rúz mubárak*
("new day blessed")

* By the way, in Standard Iranian Farsi the long /a/ (<ﺍ>, <á>, <â>) sounds
pretty much identical to that in many Lowlands Saxon (Low German) varieties
([ɒ:]), like in "extremel posh" English "party".

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron

P.S.: I had a great time at the Persian New Year party, which was to be
expected, given my experiences with hospitality, joyfulness and indulgence
in poetry, song and dance at gatherings of "Persians" (Iranians, Tajiks, and
various other Iranic-speaking ethnic groups of Iran, Afghanistan,
Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and the western and eastern slopes of the Pamir
mountains, including China).
