Gabriele and Ron,
I read your discussion about the conflict between
scientific and down-to-earth approaches
to our languages and about Fiete´s regrettable
departure with great interest and even greater amazement.
Honestly, I don´t feel this conflict. How to write a language
is a very down-to-earth subject with many practical consequ-
ences, but to define an orthography needs taking a good
scientific look - dissecting it.
Most practical users of transistor radios or computers have
no idea and/or are not at all interested in what it took to
invent the transistor: pure science and fundamental-physics
research. The two go together, one not without the other.
If an LL-L posting gets too scientific for me (and some do,
I´m an electrical engineer) I skip it, like I have to skip so
many other listings, for lack of time. But it doesn´t give me
the right to tell the scientists off. There should be room for all
aspects of LL languages in our list, and thank goodness there is,
thanks to our competent management.
Cheers, Mike Wintzer
