Subject: Morphology

Folks,

As many of you already know, the third person singular neuter pronoun _it_ ~
_et_ is lost in quite a few dialects of Lowlands Saxon (Low German),
especially among dialects of the northern range. These dialects use _dat_ ~
_det_ (or cognates thereof) instead, and _dat_ also means 'that'. I wonder
if this change is due to North Germanic influence, considering that the same
word is used for 'it' and 'that' among the language varieties of Scandinavia
and Iceland as well (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish _det_, Icelandic _það_ < Old
Norse _þat_).

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
