Frederic,
I still wonder why, this language identity hasn't been on a higher level of
conscience in French-Flanders.
I know, people were punished when they spoke flemish on the playground of
their
school.
This historical fact of course is a shame. It was clearly an intentional
strategy of wiping out this regional language which was a remnant of 17th
century conquering by the French of this historical VERY flemish area.
People
must have been so influenced by the system of power and its
language-errasing
strategy, that even nowadays, they feel a bit ashamed of speaking it.
But the idea that nowadays, most of the people in that area aren't aware of
this history , I find a very sad story.
Their history and origin is definitely Flemish. Toponymy, Familynames,
Landscape typology and so on: they are highly and allmost completely
flemish.
Why for godsake, people remain so unknowledgable about their history?
It is without doubt that this French-making strategy has succesfully reached
its goal.
Of course second world war was also of an importance influence.
As in Belgian Flanders, Flemish was associated with the German invader....
Whereas in the Walloon part the collaboration was as important as in
Flanders.....
