           butterfly
Let me climb a little off, here. The ordinary Afrikaans for butterfly is,
predictably, 'vlinder', & the bowtie may be called a 'vlinderstrikkie' (or
else 'strikdassie'). The other name for the butterfly is 'skoenlapper' =
shoe rag, as for rubbing up a pair of polished shoes. Of course Ron knows
that the Yiddish for rag is 'shmattes', or even metaphorically anything of
the same little worth. I was never content in my mind with the association
of these words. Thanks for the string.

Yrs,
Mark
