Subject: LL-L Names

Hi all,

Gary, I've noticed that certain groups here in South Africa might
shorten names such as: Lazarus to Laz and Remember to Mem,
and I've heard the Sharon to Shaz one.

The r to z shortened forms are not typical in Afrikaans.

Other pet names are:
Kas or Kassie from Kasper
Hans or Hansie from Johannes
Koos/Kosie from Kobus>Jakobus
Mientjie from Elmien
Daantjie from Daniel
Driekie from Hendrika/Hendrina
Gertjie or Gerrie from Gerhardus/Gerrit

Hello all,

Gary wrote in part:

I have a question regarding 'pet' forms of names. My
name is Gary. In England this is often shortened to
'Gaz' [is this the case in America?].

My brother's name is Gary - I have never heard this form used before by
anybody here in the US to refer to him. At least not here in New England.
