It's common in Australia too.  Sharon - Shazza, Barry - Bazza etc.  And in 
Leicester where I grew up, people bumping into you would even say "soz" - 
Sorry!

Hey All,
The only example that comes to mind for the r to z change in the States 
would be the nick for Charles - Chaz. In all other cases that I can think 
of, from Barry-Ba^r or Gary-Ga^r, to even a nick of my nickname Larry-La^r, 
the r does not change. Even woman's names receive the same treatment 
Mary-Ma^r. The other oddity was Kal for Karl. Haven't come across too many 
people named Lazarus though.......
