Isn't it possible just to replace @ by something else, like "?" or just
leave it out? That way we can reconstruct the address easily and still
correspondent with each other. I know that is a lot of bother for you,
though

Hi Ron,

Thanks, this is a good move to safeguard our anonimity.

Cheerio,

Thanks. Ingmar and Elsie.

No, Ingmar. That would be a very poor security precaution. If you can
figure it out, so can the mischief-makers. I am trying to safeguard mainly
against automated address mining programs, and, yes, they search for the "@"
and would be thrown off by its absence. But I also want to safeguard
against manual mining as well as against cases in which unwelcome email
contacts could be the result, be it by a person's "blast from the past" or
an infatuated and potentially stalking stranger. The latter has happened to
me and to at least two other people on the List, though it is not clear in
all cases if LL-L played any role in it.

By the way, I understand that this type of thing is the latest trend in list
management.

Please look at your addresses above to get an idea of the method. I may
change the wording now and again. At any rate, I want people to understand
that these are disguised addresses, while programs will not pick this up, at
least not for a while, and spammers will get bunches of failure messages,
which is just great. (The more the merrier, as far as I am concerned.)

I will leave the country codes wherever there are any (thus the Netherlands
and South Africa above).

I will leave the administrative address intact, also my private address so
you can contact me or at the administrative address, in case of my absence,
Mathieu, Sandy or whoever may be in charge. We, the administrators, are the
only persons who can look up your addresses, and we will make sure the
information does not fall into the wrong hands.

If you wish to get in touch with another member you need to approach
Mathieu, Sandy or me at lowlands-l at lowlands-l.net. We will not simply give
you the address of that person but will contact that person and ask him or
her for permission first.

I very much hope that this measure will make it easier and more enticing for
many a lurker to "unlurk" him- or herself, to decide to advance to the
verbal or verbose membership level. This would be a lovely side benefit.

Thanks for your understanding and support in this and other matters.
