From: R. F. Hahn <lowlands-l at lowlands-l.net>
Subject: Holidays

Gelukkige 60ste Bevrijdingsdag, lieve Nederlandse vrienden!

On behalf of the entire List, I want to send all our Dutch members greetings
and wishes for the 60th Liberation Day of their country (May 5). I wish I
could say that these 60 years the world has come a long way, but
unfortunately freedom and justice have yet a long way to go in many parts of
the world, and intolerance keeps trying to take advantage of complacency and
inattention. Nevertheless, I am happy to know that at least we Lowlanders
have been doing our little bit toward allowing friendship to blossom where
injustice and enmity had once scattered the seeds of distrust and hatred
among relatives.
Happy 60th Liberation Day, dear friends in and from the Netherlands!

Snee un Wöör un greesig Reeden

   vun Waltrud Bruhn

Snee un Wöör un greesig Reeden,
   greesig Swiegen, Snee un Sneewacht.
   Snee verwöltert Land un Grenzen,
   bargt den Wind un Wulkenwunner.
   Spreedt Geschenken, weiht Verdarven,
   weent tohoop mit Hasseltelgen,
   Meeschentung'n un Hamamelis.
Kreeg en Hart vun 'n Geigerzähler
   in sien lammerweeken Liev.
   Smitt Millionen Wind- un Danzbeen,
un du weetst nich, wat he vörhett.
Netten köönt dar gar nix griepen,
   un Soldaten köönt nix fangen.
   Bruun de Eer un steengedüllig,
   Krüderbloot op Storm un Hochtiet.
"Ja!" de Antwoort op twee "Wüllt-ji?"
   Greesig Fragen.
Snee vun Wöör. Un greesig Swiegen.

Swatte Asch schriggt veel mehr Wahrheit.

Snow and words and dreadful talking

   by Waltrud Bruhn
   translated by R. F. Hahn

Snow and words and dreadful talking,
dreadful silence, snow and snow surge.
Snow lays waste countries and borders,
   rescues wind and clouds' miracles.
It spreads gifts, it blows destruction,
   weeps along with hazel branches,
   with titmice tongues and hamamelis,
   has a Geiger counter heart
in its body soft as lambs.
It swings a million wind and dance legs,
and no one knows what it intends.
Nets just can't ensnare and trap then,
nor can soldiers seize and capture.
The earth lies brown with stony patience.
Herbal blood in storm and wedding.
Two times "Will you?" gets "I will."
   Ghastly questions.
Snow and words and dreadful talking.

Black ashes scream a lot more truth.
