For what it's worth, Irish has _teaghlach_ 'household', now used in sense of
'nuclear family' from _teach_ 'house' (Cornish _teylu_ and _choy_ earlier
_ty_ respectively, with _tyack_ 'householder' now meaning 'farmer'). So
perhaps _thegn_ is semantically related to something to do with houses /
homesteads (muster / wapentak) for militia purposes.
