Nice try, Jacqueline!

As far as I know, the word "masque" and its equivalents hadn't quite hit 
Northern Europe at that time.  It probably entered via Italian _masquera_ 
from Arabic ﻣﺴﺨﺮﺓ _masħara(t)_ 'derision', 'take-off', 'spoof', 
'tomfoolery', 'fool's tricks', and in the beginning it meant 'disguise', 
'mummery' in Europe.

Talking about "disguise," I have to confess a blunder before the peanuts 
come flying from the gallery.  I translated German _Larve_ as "larva."  What 
was meant in this case was "disguise," "mumming."  :-)

Anyway, Jacqueline, it "to tell" were involved, it would not have a _t-_ at 
the beginning in Old German but a <z-> standing for _ts-_ (Old German 
_zellen_ 'to tell', 'to count').  Old German _t-_ came from _d-_.
