That is a typical name for the Twente (Tubantia) region, where you find surnames
as Olde Kalter, Oude Regelink and Klein Essink. Note the -ink suffix, too!

In my town we have a family Willems of Brilman. This will seem even more
ridiculous if you realise that, in English it could be rendered into "Williams or
glasses-man". When I first read the name in our village newspaper I thought that
the 'Brilman'-part would be a nickname; as if people could choose to call this
man by his true surname or by his nickname. Maybe it originated this way. In
multiplex communities, such as Katwijk, where many people have the same surnames,
you find hundreds of nicknames that will be passed on for generations to come.

Ron,

Here in Peru (and  I presume other Latin American countries) 'y' (and) is only
used  when the mother and father have the same surname. Otherwise the maternal
surname just follows the paternal surname.

José Castillo y Castillo,  Carlos Pérez y Pérez, etc but Juan Pérez Castillo

Thanks, Dave!

Actually, I have come across _y_ between different surnames as well, so I believe
both systems exist.  I understand that consistent use of _y_ is older and is now
fading away.
