Beste Lowlanners,

disser Doog keym ick opp dat neddersassische Wourd LS 'fell' and
'felljogen', anner Schriiv-Wiis kunn woll ween 'vell'.
'Fell' hebb 'ck in miin Tiid in Oost-Freysland leyhrt as eyn Adverbium G:
'(sehr) schnell', E: '(very) hard' in context mit LS: 'foyhrn', G: 'fahren',
E: 'to drive'.

In uns Rebeyd kenn ick man dat Wourd LS: 'felljogen', wat in siin' eyrsten
Sinn meynt G: 'das (gefährliche)Durchgehen von Pferden (welches meistens zu
Unfällen führt)', E: 'the (dangerous) bolting of a horse (mostly ending in
an accident)'.

De tweyde Sinn is G: 'halsberecherisch, riskant fahren (eines Automobiles
etc.), was ebenfalls meist zum Unfall führt', E: 'to drive (a car etc.) in a
breakneck speed and mostly also ending in an accident'.

Woneem koomt dit Wourd woll van avv? Schull dat verwandt ween an G:
'fallen', E: 'to fall'? Anners wat *fallt* mii door nich tou in.

Allerbest!

Jonny,

felljagen 'to ride/drive recklessly'

Suggestion:

felljagen < *feldjagen < *to Feld jagen ("to ride (like the devil across)
the field")

A widespread phonological rule:

                            d -> X [+sono] / [+sono]__

This makes /d/ assimilate to a preceding sonorant consonant, in some
dialects also word-finally.

Examples:

Kind (~ Kinn) -> Kinner (child -> children)
old (~ ol) -> oler (old -> older)
Wold (~ Wol) -> Wolen (forest -> forests, wold -> wolds)
wild (~ will) -> willer (wild -> wilder)
(ander >) anner (other)
(Külde > Küld >) Küll (cold, coldness, frigidity)
(Folde >) Fold (~ Fol) -> Folen (fold -> folds)
(hempeð > hembed >) Hemd (~ Hemm) -> Hemmen (shirt -> shirts)

This also tends to apply in the first segment of a compound, as in
(Feldbrink >) Fellbrink (edge of a field).

Kumpelmenten,
Reinhard/Ron
