Assuming this is true, I see little reason to believe that any minority
language has much of a chance of surviving the assult of the inter-net. On
the other hand.... :-)), the internet may be the ONLY chance of any minority
language to survive simply by the effect of operations such as this
discussion group started to preserve a language.

And the power of MSN must not be underestimated:):)

I am not sure how many of the younger people still know some and use dialect
in the other parts (Low Saxon f.ex.), but the informal context of chatting,
and more recently also blogging, is surely a boost for dialects, if not in
spoken form then at least written. Nearly all (Flemish) people I know write
a kind of hybrid dutch/dialect; since the norm on msn seems to be 'write
like you speak'. The spelling system (and phonology to a lesser extent) is
mainly based on the standard language conventions, but in word use,
morphology etc it conserves a lot of the older dialect.
I even see this "msn-flemish" appear in informal letters from and to my
youngest sister. I only learnt to write like this when I signed up for MSN
when I was 12-13 years old. In the beignning you write like you're used to (
i.e. standard dutch) but the "group effect" makes you abandon this quickly:)

Even my father, when chatting with him, begins using dialect quite often, he
even writes "platter" (i.e. more towards dialect) than he usually speaks in
the daily life. Among older people (like him, and my mother) the habit of
writing standard language is still a lot stronger though, among youngsters
in my neighbourhood it's almost nihil outside formal contexts.

The same can be said about Norway, not being a Low Land but being a land
with a strong dialectal tradition. Especially in the Westland (where nynorsk
stands strongest) most people I chat with write some kind of (modern)
dialect, like most blogs I find (norwegians seem to be diehard bloggers).

Moin,

Hadden ze de kijkers in Groningen erbij geteld, dan
hadden ze een iets gunstiger cijfer gehad.

Maar de Groningers mogen natuurlijk weer niet mee
doen? :)
