All right, Karl-Heinz and the rest!

Below please find a fairly close (and rough) draft translation (next to the
original) of the song La paloma we've been talking about lately. Suggestions
are welcome.

As you can tell, Mexican association with it isn't unjustified.
Supposedly, guachinango
is an older nickname for "Mexican."

The music is a habanera, though, is thus associated with old-time Cuba. (I
happen to love habaneras.)

  *La Paloma*

*Sebastián Yradier (1809–1865)*

Cuando salí de la Habana
¡Valgame Dios!
Nadie me ha visto salir
Si no fuí yo.
Y una linda Guachinanga
S'allá voy yo,
Que se vino tras de mi,
Que sí señor.

Estribillo:
Si a tu ventana llega
Una Paloma,
Tratala con cariño
Que es mi persona.
Cuentala tus amores,
Bien de mi vida,
Coronala de flores
Que es cosa mia.
¡Ay, Fadila que sí!
¡Ay, que dame tu amor!
¡Ay, que ven te conmigo,
Chinita, adonde vivo yo!

El dia nos casemos
¡Valgame Dios!
En la semana que hay ir
Me hace reir
Desde la Yglesia juntitos,
Que sí señor,
Nos hiremos à dormir,
Allá voy yo.

Estribillo

Cuando el curita nos seche
La bendicion
En la Yglesia Catedral
Allá voy yo
Yo te daré la manita
Con mucho amor
Y el cura dos hisopazos
Que sí señor

Estribillo

Cuando haya pasado tiempo
¡Valgame Dios!
De que estemos casaditos
Pues sí señor,
Lo menos tendremos siete
Y que furor!
O quince guachinanguitos
Allá voy yo

*The Dove
*
*(c)**2007, **Translation: Reinhard F. Hahn*

When I left Havana City—
So help me God!—
Not a soul saw me leave; it was
As though I was not.
And a Mexican girl, so pretty,
Would follow me,
Would go everywhere I'd go.
Oh, Lord! It's true.

Refrain:
If some time a dove comes flying
To your window,
Treat it with loving kindness;
It's I to see you.
Tell it your loving thoughts then,
My precious darling!
Crown it with lovely flowers;
For that I'm yearning!
Oh, Fadila, indeed!
Oh, may you give me your love, dear!
Oh, may you come with me,
Sweetheart, where I will be!

On the day when we will marry—
So help me God!—
The week of the wedding—
It makes me beam with joy—
To the Church arm in arm together.
We'll walk. Oh, yes!
Then we'll go back to sleep.
Well, there I go!

Refrain

When the dear priest has given us
His blessings
Into the Cathedral hall
I'll go with you.
I'll give you this hand of mine
With all my love
And the priest two aspergilla.
Oh, Lord! It's true.

Refrain

When then time has run its course—
So help me God!—
That we are a wedded couple,
Then—it's for sure—
We will have no less than seven—
Lord! What racket!—
Or fifteen little Méxicanos.
Well, there I go!
