To whomever is enthousiastic:

A clearing in a wood is is a ...rode/...rade;
but only when the clearing was made by axes, or the
like.
Placenames ending on ...lo were clearings made by
fire.

Placenames containing laar/laren also indicate a
clearing in the wood, but one that is a meadow or the
like, i.e. suitable for cattle. In the Netherlands
'Laar' always was on the level of the water-surface
[the best for grass]; the German Laar's could be on a
higher level.
