There's an article on German Wikipedia on the word: <
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagalut>. I think the definition is good and
about the origin they say the same, what I know about it: "Nothing is known
exactly but the origin could be English 'bag o'loot'".

Thanks, Marcus. Nice one, and not implausible, possibly something like
"(you/the old) bag o' loot" in pirates' jargon, then spread to general
sailors' jargon, which North German seafarers picked up.

Theo, to answer your other question, Low Saxon *Bagaluut *(!~ *Baggalut* ~
etc.) means something like "scoundrel" or "rascal".
