Hi all

Ron, pigeon racing is still practiced here in SA, not illegal and well
regulated.

Regards,

Elsie

Hi all,

Eek, don't you guys know that bird flu might be carried in pigeon flesh?

My brothers loved catching doves (called "lemoenduifies" or "tortelduifies")
in a chicken-wire covered bicycle
rim and my father did not object as long as they ate their catch. They
stopped their sport after a few times of
struggling through the tiny morsels.

Here in the western side of pre-1990 downtown Johannesburg, one could order
pigeon with orange sauce
at ethnic restaurants. By the late 1980s, the restaurants started closing
down when its patronage
suffered increasing numbers of car thefts. The story is told that the pigeon
population suddenly swelled
to such proportions that it prompted certain mining houses to close up their
inner building courtyards
with netting and sponsoring birth control for the pigeons.

Talking about eating dog; is the slang for food "chow" and the Chinese
breed's name linguistically connected?

Elsie
