1  - Brugge

I found an other sketch of the very same building on p. 77 in:
Valentin Vermeersch e.a. "*Brugge*"
2002 Mercatorfonds

I scanned both pages 76 and 77 (they are a bit lager than my scanner, sorry
for the quality).

The left column gives some history of the Hanze in Brugges
The 2d column, lower part, describes the preceeding building and the
scetched new Hanze building
The 3d column lower part: caption for the scetch of the building

the scetch is at the top right
the left column deals with the word "*Oosterlingen*"
the right with the etymology of "*beurs - bourse*"

Since the connection with the see, the "Zwin", was sanding, *Brugge* lost
its see-harbour status. *Damme*, midway to the see toke over for a while
(finally Antwerp would come in the picture).

2 - Damme

"Dit is West-Vlaanderen",
St Andries, Flandria, 1959 in 3 vol
describes all West-Flemish municipalities.

*Damme* is dealt with vol 1, p. 301-309
quote p. 306
"In *1240* stichtten de steden van de *Hanza *een faktorij te Damme."
no precision about the exact place.

Is it a coïncidence that in Flemish versions "*Tijl Uilenspiegel*" lived in
*Damme*?

"... Maar ook in Vlaanderen was Uilenspiegel sinds lang gekend. Een bewijs
ervan kan men zien in de eigenaardige verwarring waartoe de grafsteen van
Jakob van Maerlant in de kerk van Damme aanleiding gaf. Van Male schrijft in
het begin van de achttiende eeuw "" dat alzoo de lessenaar, die vóór
Maerlant op zijn lessenaar [??] stond afgebeeld niet duidelijk meer was, men
dien voor een spiegel aanzag, en vermits er van boven een uil staet, dacht
het volk dat Uilenspiegel daar begraven was."". Naar de overlevering werd
het een ware toeloop naar het vermoede graf, zodat de pastoor een steen liet
omkeren. Toch blijft de volksoverlevering volhouden dat Tijl onder de toren
begraven ligt."
Actually this all preceedes De Coster's more modern version of "Tijl
Uilenspiegel" in Damme.
