Dear Utz and other Lowlanders:
I am very sorry, but I just don't get the point, or is the point that there
is no point?

By the way, Old Dutch had "hunt" so I might assume it might have had an "e"
as a case ending.

I found this explanation in the Hamburger Abendblatt:
"Nicht viel weniger bekannt ist die Redewendung "Buxtehude, wo die Hunde
mit dem Schwanz bellen". Dafür hat der Buxtehuder Heimatverein folgende
Erklärung: In Buxtehude, einer Stadt mit niederländischen Siedlern,
seien die Glocken schon früh mit einem Seil geschlagen worden - während
sie anderswo noch mit dem Hammer geschlagen wurden. Da Glocke
niederländisch "Hunte" hieß, wurde Buxtehude als Ort bekannt, wo die
Hunte mit dem Schwanz läutet - oder niederländisch "bellt". So entstand
die berühmte Redewendung."

But I can´t find any entry for the Dutch Term 'hunte', neither in the

Might the etymology of the river Hunte give a clue? What is it?

The Hunte is a tributary of River Weser not far east from the
Netherlands-German border.
