But technical and scientific "English" is for the most part Latin and Greek,
and is what has removed English from its roots. To speakers of other
languages who envy English's international status I would say "beware of
what you wish for".



So true, but Paul, not all languages have taken the English route of
'borrowing' The one significant reason for the sheer size of the OED.



Afrikaans makes a contrary practice, but not cast in stone, of constructing
vocabulary from native Afrikaans roots, or failing that Netherlands, or at
least Teutonic. That is why we call a carbrettor a 'vergasser', which has
the added advantage of giving a clue what the Yell it actually does.



So also for 'moltrein' (mole-train) with subway, 'flaterwater'
(mistake-water) for brandy, & so it goes. Scientific terminology need not
threaten the integrity of a language, but 'borrowing' certainly may.
