Hi all,

Mark, I'm often wondering whether the language mental block relates to
someone being presumptuous or simply absent-minded. I believe it's a bit of
both.

But you're asking about Afrikaans newspapers and the short answer is, yes.

Perskor (http://af.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perskor#Koerante) published a few
Afrikaans newspapers (Transvaler etc), until the late '80s but had to
compete with the less conservative Nasionale Pers which was founded
in 1915). Perskor still publishes a few Afrikaans mags including Rooi Rose
and Keur.

The biggest Afrikaans publisher and media owner is the Naspers/ MHI Group, a
multinational listed company (Naspers is short for 'Nasionale Pers') who
publishes the major Afrikaans newspapers under Media 24 (Media24.com or for
online news: News24), including Beeld, Burger, Rapport, and Volksblad.
They have publishing and internet businesses in Eastern Europe, Thailand,
Brazil, China, Russia and the Netherlands.
Naspers also publishes the most popular Afrikaans mags here
including Huisgenoot, Baba & Kleuter, Sarie, and the specialized mags,
Insig, Weg!, Visi, Landbouweekblad, as well as a host of English language
mags, including Drum, You (based on the very popular Huisgenoot) and many

Afrikaans is a big seller yet we seldom see Afrikaans ads on public
television and just now and again on commercial Afrikaans TV!

Hi Elsie:

I would like to confirm what you say, not with respect to Afrikaans or other
South African languages,but with respect to Spanish and English.  Whenever
I've traveled in Mexico, most people see me as "American" (USA) and seemnot
to even hear that I have asked them a question in Spanish.  Theyseemingly
automatically answer me in English.  Now, if they don't know anyEnglish,
they don't seem to have that "problem."

Likewise, when I traveled in the Netherlands many, many years ago (1970), I
could merely walk into a store and they would speak to me in English.  Some
credit that to "Americans" acting like weown the world, but really, how
could I have given myself away thateasily?  Clothes?  I don't think so,
everyone back then went aroundwith dirty hair and dirty jeans ;-).  Even
when I tried to talk my haltingDutch, they stuck with English.  My halting
Dutch may have given them evenmore reason to stick with English, huh?
BTW, this weekend I checked the Internet at home to find sources of the news
in Afrikaans that I could practice reading.  I read Dutch pretty well and I
find the posts here on the list in Afrikaans fairly easy to read as well.  I
found several online newspapers, but they all seem to have the same owner.
Every one had thesame URL www.news24.com with the individual paper after the
slash.  Does just one media company own all of the Afrikaans language
newspapers?
