you all consider Gronings to belong?

Hey, David!

Let me get the ball rolling by giving you my "simple" answer.

There ought to be no doubt that the indigenous varieties of Groningen (and
in some neighboring areas) belong to Low Saxon.

More specifically, I consider them a subgroup of Northern Low Saxon, one of
the two major far-western ones that have significant Frisian substrata, the
other group being that of Eastern Friesland on the German side of the
border. (These areas used to be Frisian speaking.)

I find the Groningen dialects easiest to understand among the Low Saxon
dialects of the Netherlands. It is only the Dutch-based spelling that
creates a barrier for most other speakers of Northern Low Saxon in Germany.

Then please click on the link [German spelling]. Most speakers on the German
side would understand it pretty well if they encountered it written that
way. You might also check out translations of other Low Saxon varieties.

You will notice that, unlike most other Low Saxon dialects of the
Netherlands, most Groningen dialectshave preserved the second person
familiar pronoun *doe* (*du*) "thou" that is the norm on the German side of
the border.
