Â

When browsing web pages I often get squares in stead of characters.

I made a couple of printscreens (jpg files)and marked the squares:

Â

1 for http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alphabet_international_africain

I get http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/cong/wik1.jpg

Â

2 for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit

I get http://www.euro-support.be/tmp/cong/wik2.jpg

Â

Do other people get the same problem when retrieving these web pages?

Â

At least some people must be able to retrieve these pages correctly.

I appreciate all suggestions helping me out of this problem.

Â

Thanks,

Regards,

Roger

I see them correctly. What is the encoding that your browser uses? Change it
to unicode (under the tools or view menus I suppose)

and try both UTF-8 and UTF-16LE.

Probably has to do with browser settings and the fonts available on you
system.

I have some short advice on my website

Dag Roger & LL-L,

No problem here with Opera browser (neither with Safari) on Mac-OSX 10.4
with UTF-8 (hope the characters can be seen as I see them now):

No problem in Safari with UTF-8 text encoding (hope you see it as I do when
writing):

Phonology and Sandhi
The Sanskrit vowels are as discussed in the section above. The long syllabic
l (ḹ) is not attested, and is only discussed by grammarians for systematic
reasons. Its short counterpart ḷ occurs in a single root only, kḷp "to
order, array". Long syllabic r (ṝ) is also quite marginal, occurring in the
genitive plural of r-stems (e.g. mātṛ "mother" and pitṛ "father" have
gen.pl. mātṝṇām and pitṝṇām). i, u, ṛ, ḷ are vocalic allophones of
consonantal y, v, r, l. There are thus only 5 invariably vocalic phonemes,

a, ā, ī, ū, ṝ.
Visarga ḥ ः is an allophone of r and s, and anusvara ṃ, Devanagari ं of any
nasal, both in pausa (ie, the nasalized vowel). [...]

____________________________________________

But in Opera, even with UTF-8 there are problems on this page e. g. with the
last paragraf, where "Visarga ḥ ः " and "Devanagari ं " appeare as mere
squares.
