Ik wull nu geern (un ik weet, dat ik dor veel vörheff...) en Wöörbook
hebben, dat blot Infos sammelt, op de een sik denn ok verlaten kann, dat all
plattdüütsche Dialekten afdeckt un dat nich blot en Wöörlist is, nee, dat en
richtig Wöörbook is mit allens bi un mit so'n Ümfang, dat dor tominnst
soveel insteiht as in en Wöörbook för Reisen oder in en Taschenwöörbook. Dat
dor tominnst de Wöör instaht, de een so allerdaags bi't Snacken höört un
bruukt. (Opstunns is mien Wöörbook dor noch wied von weg, dat ji dor nich to
veel verwachten doot.)

Ik müss dor nu toeerst maal en Ansatz finnen. Blot all möögliche
Schrievwiesen in all Dialekten un all Varianten un all Orthografien sammeln,
dat dee bedüden - weet nich - villicht en poor Millionen Indrääg. Dat geiht
nich. Also heff ik en Schridd trüch maakt. Ik wull nich de modernen Formen
opschrieven,  ik wull lever de Ooldsassischen (oder Vör-Ooldsassischen)
Formen opschrieven (in en phoneetsche Schrievwies). Un denn all de schaven
Luden chronoloogsch dor op anwennen bet ik de moderne Form heff (noch jümmer
in phoneetsche Schrievwies). Denn dor op en Orthografie-Funktion anwennen,
de de phoneetsche Schrievwies in en moderne Schrievwies ümwannelt. Mit disse
Methood lett sik elkeen Woord in elkeen Dialekt un Schrievwies dorstellen.
Höört sik na en malle Idee an. Ik weer dor toeerst ok nich övertüügt von. De
Idee harr ik toeerst 2006 (as wi an't Nadenken weren, wo't opbest weer mit
nds.wiktionary.org, dat wi dat in'e Gang kriegt. Wat wi nie in'e Gang kregen
hebbt [Wikis sünd en feine Saak för Nakieksels, aver en Schiet för
Wöörböker]). Dat hett denn noch dree Johr duert, dat ik dat utprobeert heff
(ik bün dor nu al söss Maand mit in'e Gang). Un dat klappt. Tominnst för dat
Noordneddersassische geiht dat good.

Opstunns ünnerstütt de Websteed blot vereenheitlicht Noordneddersassisch (de
Utglieksform, de wi veel op nds.wikipedia.org bruukt) un denn noch den
Dialekt von de Stader Geest (mien Heimatdialekt). Ik heff ok al Renderers
för dat Platt von'n Barnim un von de West-Veluwe schreven, aver de löppt
noch nich so astrein, de mööt eerst noch utbetert warrn. Maal en Bispeel,

Nedderlandsch instellen. Annere Spraken will ik ok geern tofögen, wenn dat
een för mi översett. Opstunns gifft dat op de Websteed en plattdüütsche
Definition von dat Woord (so as de Duden dat mit Hoochdüütsch maakt) un denn
noch dat Woord Hoochdüütsch översett. In miene Datenbank offline heff ik ok
noch Översetten na Engelsch, Nedderlandsch, Däänsch un Eestnisch (sorteert
na de Tall von vörhannen Indrääg). Aver de sünd op de Websteed noch nich to
sehn, dat sünd noch nich noog in'n Vergliek mit de Tall von hoochdüütsch
Översetten. Dat Wöörbook hett mehr as 8000 Indrääg mit mehr as 8500 indragen
Ünnerbedüden. De Tall von hoochdüütsche Översetten is 11.000. För Engelsch
heff ik blot 3500.

dat Programm en Woord in all de 118 verscheden Dialekten op de Koort
ümwanneln. Ik mutt blot för jeden enkelten Dialekt en Renderer schrieven
(dat is nich wenig Arbeid, schall also noch en Stoot duern, bet ik dat trech
heff).

De Websteed is noch nich offiziell rut, aver wenn ji wüllt, dröfft ji geern
ok al anner Lüüd dorvon vertellen. Wenn ji dor wat to to seggen hebbt,
Fragen hebbt oder noch Ideen ans, denn man rut dormit. (Opbest aver nich
hier över de List, dat wi Reinhard nich to dull argert.)

I'd like to introduce to you a little website I created: <
http://www.plattmakers.de/>. It's a dictionary. For Low Saxon. Well, of
course there are dozens of dictionaries online for Low Saxon. But none that
is extensive, fully inclusive and reliable. The dictionary at <
http://deutsch-plattdeutsch.de/> has more than 45,000 entries, but many are
duplicates or dubious user submissions. <
http://www.ndr.de/kultur/plattdeutsch/woerterbuch/index.html> is user-fed
too and mostly a omnium-gatherum of words which users deemed fun to share. <
http://www.drentswoordenboek.nl/> is a really good dictionary, but limited
to Drents. Just the same for <http://members.home.nl/dialexicon/index.htm>
and Twents. There are some extensive dictionaries available on Google Books
(like Holsteinisches Idiotikon, Göttingisch-Grubenhagisches Idiotikon, the
Wörterbuch der westfälischen Mundart etc. pp.), but they are all not
searchable. So there's no single resource that can be called _the_ Low Saxon
dictionary.

So my (rather ambitious, I fear) goal was to create a site, that only
collects reliable information, that covers all dialects of Low Saxon, that's
not just a mere word list, but a full-fledged dictionary at least extensive
enough to cover all words that would be present in a travel or small pocket
dictionary. At least covering all the words you are likely to come across in
normal conversation. (At the moment my dictionary is still far away from
fulfilling this specs, so don't expect too much.)

So I needed an approach. Just collecting all the possible spellings in all
dialects and all variants and all orthographies would mean - I dunno - like
several million possible entries. That was no option. So I decided to do a
step back. Instead of storing modern word forms I rather note down the words
in their Old Saxon (or pre-Old Saxon) form (in a phonetic notation). Then I
apply all the sound shifts that occured since then in their chronological
order to arrive at the modern form (still in phonetic notation). Then I
apply an orthography function that renders the phonetic string into a modern
word. With this method I can render a word in any dialect and any
orthography. This may sound like a crazy idea. I was very sceptical of my
own idea too. I originally had this idea back in 2006 (when we were
considering the best way to create a meaningful dictionary at
nds.wiktionary.org, which never gained any momentum [cause wikis are great
for an encyclopedia, but crap for a dictionary]). It took three years until
I actually tried it (and I'm working on it since six months now). And it
works. At least for Northern Low Saxon the results are good.

Right at the moment the live website only supports General Northern Low
Saxon (a form that levels dialectal differences and is much used on
nds.wikipedia.org) and the dialect of the Stader Geest (which is my own home
dialect). I also already created renderers for the Low Saxon dialects of the
Barnim and of the West-Veluwe, but these still have some glitches that need
to be fixed first. To give an example of how the dialects are rendered
differently, have a look at <

Northern Low Saxon). It's the word 'baven/boben' meaning 'up, above'.

For each word I collect information from dictionaries about where the word
is known and used. Therefore I have grouped Low Saxon into 118 different
dialect areas. This information can be visualized in a map, e.g. <

http://www.plattmakers.de/index.php?show=map&id=286> for the words 'up' and
'op' (meaning 'on, up'). Most maps are not as complete as this example. Most
of them are mostly white (that means: no info available yet) cause it's
quite a bunch of work to collect this information from the dictionaries.

At the moment the interface is available in Low Saxon, German, English and
Dutch. Other languages can be added too, if someone is willing to translate
it. At the moment for each word a definition in Low Saxon and a translation
into German are available online. In my database offline I also already have
collected translations into English, Dutch, Danish and Estonian (in
descending order of number). They are not online so far cause their number
is low compared to the number of German translations. The dictionary has
more than 8000 entries with more than 8500 submeanings. The number of German
translations is about 11,000. For English it is only 3500.

So far the usefulness of the website with only two available dialects is
limited and it's not officially launched (it's beta). But potentially it can
render a word in any of the 118 different dialects as defined by the dialect
areas you saw on the map. I just need to implement a renderer for each of it
(which is much work, so progress will be slow).

Although it is not officially launched yet, you are still free to share
information about the site if you like. If you want to comment on the site,
