We don't traditionally have Christmas in Scotland, but for the New Year
there's "black bun", which is a bit like a fruit cake but the fruit is
so dense the cake looks black. It's made a few months beforehand and
wrapped in a hard, thin pastry to keep the flavour and moisture in as it
matures.

Or these days you can just buy it from the shops!

Thanks, Sandy.

That sounds very much like English plum pudding (a.k.a. Christmas pudding)
to me, also prepared months in advance and traditionally eaten in this
season. The sauce it's served with tends to contain a good bit of booze.
