Subject: Etymology

Dear Lowlanders,

One casual word of greeting in Finnish is *Moi!* (or *Moi, moi!*), similar
to *Hei!* and *Terve!* (cf. Estonian *Tere!*)

Is this *Moi!* by any chance a Low Saxon loan?

As most of you know by now, Low Saxon *Moin!* 'Hi!' comes from something
like **Moien Dag!* "Pleasant day!" (not from a word for 'morning' as
frequently assumed), and in some dialects, such as those of Drenthe, you
simply say *Moi!*
