The Germans pioneered daylight savings time during the Great War, but I
don't know if they used a 24 hour clock. John *[Rodenburg]*

 Beste Reinhard,

you asked in regard to the author using the Anglo-Saxon way "A.M /P.M" to
describe the time at A.D. 1917:
Might the writer have been from Heligoland (*Helgoland, Luun*) by any
chance? As no doubt you know, the island was under British rule for a while.
An interesting idea - but he hadn't visited Heligoland throughout all his
life. And he hadn't been soldier or sailor. As far as I'm possible to
locate him and his background I just know that he was born in Upper Saxonia
and spent his (later) live somewhere between Berlin and Dresden. There he
wrote down his impressions about WW I, being "just" an ordinary civilian (he
was a so called "white age-group", born AD 1867, so he hadn't to serve as a
soldier).

 Good idea, anyway! Thanks!

 Allerbest!

Jonny Meibohm
