The supplement has 80 pages in tabloid size, but it has little about
language use.

Most interesting is the list of *Dutch place names*, which have been
replaced afterwards.

If when the former colony was ruled mainly in French, belgian law at the
time was alreasy bilingual, and so we had Dutch versions of the names of
those places.



Be aware I have nothing to do with the name Thysstad. It referred to a
family of railroad constructors from the Dalhem area, in the North East of
the province of Liège.

Nieuwe wetten, nieuwe namen



In 1971 gaf toenmalig president Mobutu de Congolese republiek een nieuwe
naam: Zaïre. Die naam Kregen ook de Congostroom ende nationale munt,
voorheen de Congolese frank. En in datzelfde Rader van de authenticité
moesten de Zairezen ook afstand nemen hun veelal christelijke doopnaam. Zo
heette de president voortaan Mobutu Sese Seko Nkuku Ngbendu wa Za Banga.



In 1966 had hij al de plaatsnamen die naar de koloniale tijd verwezen, door
'authentieke' namen vervangen. In een aantal gevallen was dat al onder het
koloniale bewind gebeurd. Zo kreeg Bukavu in 1954 zijn huidige naam.
Vooraleer het definitief Moba ging heten. heette Boudewijnstad eventjes
Viningu. Bij het einde van de Mobutu-dictatuur, in 1997, kreeg het land zijn
oude naam terug, maarde andere plaatsnamen bleven bewaard.
